Environmental, Logging and Mining Films

Logging and forestry

Harvey Richards came from rural Oregon from people who had worked in farming and mining for three generations before him. His love of the forests of the West led to films exposing the wasteful and devasting logging practices of major corporations in northern California and Oregon during the 1960s and 1970s (The Stump Makers, Wasted Woods, and Vanishing Redwoods). He widened his frame to include logging practices around the nation in Timber Tigers.

Mining

His mining films started with Perch of the Devil shot in Butte, Montana to support the 1960 strike of the United Mine Workers. He returned to mining in his last film (A Tale of Ruin) that included footage taken around the country and in Africa where he filmed mining operations in 1972. He documented the immense open pit mines that have been laying waste to vast areas here and abroad.

The San Francisco Bay

In 1970, his concern for the environment led to his film Warning! Warning! which documented the environmental threats to the San Francisco Bay. The film was distributed by the Sierra Club and contributed to the Save the Bay movement that later put a halt to the systematic filling of the Bay by municipalities, and corporate and real estate interests.

Photographs

During Richards' many trips into Northern California, Oregon and other Western states, he photographed not only the mining and logging operations that he found, but also the natural beauty of the land and sea, the rivers, deserts, mountains and lakes. In the 1970s and 80s, as he travelled around the US, Europe and Africa he carried his still cameras with him, photographing as he went. His still photography is presented in photo galleries on the Photography page.
