The Harvey Richards’ Film & Photo Collection consists of 22 documentary films made from 1958 to 1972 documenting the political upheaval of the 1960s, and his collected still photography. Focusing on the West Coast, where Richards lived, the films’ subjects include
California farm workers, the
civil rights movements in California and Mississippi, the environmental destruction of western natural resources by the
forestry and
mining industries, and the
peace movement. Richards’ films were used as organizing aids by the United Farm Workers, the Sierra Club, the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and others, and have been included in countless documentaries made by film makers around the world since the 1960s. All 22 films are available as
DVD’s and video cassettes.
